What is Breathlessness ?

Breathing problems occur when you are not getting enough air, your chest is very tight, you are short of breath, or you feel like you are choking. If you have just finished strenuous exercise, you may feel short of breath. It can also occur in extreme temperatures and high altitudes.
If you have trouble breathing for any other reason, it's probably a sign of a medical problem.

  1. Asthma - You may have wheezing or shortness of breath. It can be caused by a cold (viral infection) or an allergy (such as hay fever).
  2. Pneumonia - Serious chest infection that causes shortness of breath. Feeling unwell, having a high fever (fever) and vomiting greenish mucus (sputum).
  3. COVID-19 - Can cause shortness of breath over several days.
  4. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) - A long-term lung disease that causes shortness of breath and coughing. The airways become inflamed and narrow. Chest infections can result in sudden deterioration.
  5. Heart disease - such as heart failure where the heart does not pump properly. In heart failure, the heart cannot pump effectively, so pressure is placed on the blood vessels (veins) that supply blood to the heart. This increased pressure causes fluid to accumulate in the tissues of the body. Gravity causes excess fluid to show up as swelling in the ankle.
  6. Pulmonary embolism - A blood clot in the lungs. Blood clots in the legs usually cause swollen and painful calves. Blood clots form after a long period of inactivity (such as after a long flight) and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs.

Treatment depends on the possible cause of shortness of breath. If you are a smoker, we strongly advise you to quit. It also helps in weight loss if you are overweight.

Depending on the most likely underlying cause, you may be referred to a cardiologist (cardiologist) or pulmonary (airway) specialist for further evaluation. Most cases are treated by your primary care physician, but you may be referred to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
