What is Conjuctivitis ?

Conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis) is inflammation or infection of the clear membrane (conjunctiva) that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball. When the small blood vessels of the conjunctiva become inflamed, they become more noticeable. This makes the whites of the eyes appear reddish or pink.

Conjunctivitis is often caused by bacterial or viral infections, allergic reactions, or incomplete opening of the tear ducts in infants.

Conjunctivitis can be irritating but rarely affects vision. Treatment can help relieve the symptoms of conjunctivitis. Because conjunctivitis can be contagious, early diagnosis and treatment can help limit its spread.

The most common symptoms of conjunctivitis are:

  • Redness in one or both eyes.
  • Itching in one or both eyes.
  • Roughness in one or both eyes.
  • Discharge in one or both eyes.
  • Tearing.

The causes of conjunctivitis are:

  • Virus.
  • Bacteria.
  • Allergy.
  • Chemical splash in eye.
  • Foreign object in eye.
  • Obstruction of tear duct in newborn.

Preventing the spread of conjunctivitis Practice good hygiene to reduce the spread ofconjunctivitis. Example:

  • Do not touch your eyes with your hands.
  • Wash your hands often.
  • Use clean towels and washcloths daily.
  • Do not share towels or washcloths.
  • Change pillowcases frequently.
  • Throw away eye cosmetics such as mascara.
  • Do not share eye cosmetics or personal eye care products.

Viral conjunctivitis does not require treatment unless it is caused by herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox/shingles), or a sexually transmitted disease. These are serious infections that require antiviral drugs. If left untreated, it can damage your eyes and cause vision loss.

Viral conjunctivitis cannot be treated with antibiotics.

Treatment of conjunctivitis caused by irritants
If anything gets into your eyes and irritates them, gently rinse with warm water for 5 minutes. Avoid further exposure to irritants.

Eyes improve within 4 hours after flushing. If not, call your doctor. If the substance in your eyes is a strongly acidic or alkaline chemical (such as a drain cleaner), flush your eyes with water and seek medical attention immediately.
