What is Femur Neck Fracture ?

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint made up of the thighbone or head of the femur, which acts as a ball and fits into the rounded socket of the hipbone or acetabulum. The femoral neck is the area just below the hip joint.
Fractures of the femoral neck can separate all or part of the femoral head from the rest of the femur. Fractures of the femoral neck may be displaced when the bone is displaced from its original position, or may not be displaced when there is no bone instability. These fractures can interfere with the blood supply to the fractured part of the bone. When femoral neck fractures are severely displaced, the reduced blood supply prevents these fractures from healing.

  • Femoral neck fracture
  • Minor fall or twisting of the hip in the elderly
  • Patients with osteoporosis
  • Severe trauma, etc.
  • Pain radiating to the knee
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Shortening or lateral rotation of the affected leg
  • Increased hip pain with rotation of the leg
  • Lateral swelling of the hip.
  1. Treatment of femoral neck fractures depends on age and displacement of the fracture.
  2. Conservative treatment is recommended for uncomplicated fractures and includes several days of bed rest followed by a physical rehabilitation program after 2-3 days. Doctors may also prescribe drugs to prevent blood clots, relieve pain, and treat infections.
  3. However, femoral neck fractures are rarely stable enough to be treated conservatively alone and usually require surgical repair.
  4. Femoral neck fracture surgery is performed under general or spinal anesthesia.
  5. Hip fusion is recommended if the fracture has minimal displacement and sufficient bone density. The surgeon makes a small incision on the outside of the thigh and inserts several screws to hold the broken bone in place.
  6. Hemiarthroplasty or partial hip replacement is recommended for displaced fractures. In this operation, a surgeon makes an incision on the outside of the hip joint, removes the femoral head, and replaces it with a metal implant. A hip replacement does not replace the socket.
  7. Total hip replacement is recommended if the hip had arthritis prior to the fracture. Surgeons replace the femoral head and socket in the hip joint with artificial metal implants.
