What is Full Term Pregnancy ?

Pregnancy usually lasts about 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period (also called LMP) to your due date. Your due date is the date your provider predicts your due date.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (also known as ACOG) and the Society of Maternal and Fetal Medicine (also known as SMFM) define a full-term pregnancy as a pregnancy lasting between 39 weeks 0 days and 40 weeks 6 days. This means that the pregnancy lasts from one week before the due date to one week after his due date. A full-term baby is most likely to be well compared to a premature or late baby.

ACOG and SMFM use the following definition to describe full-term pregnancy.

  1. Premature birth: The baby is born between her 37 weeks 0 days and her 38 weeks 6 days.
  2. Full term: The baby is born between 39 weeks 0 days and 40 weeks 6 days.
  3. Late Dates: Baby is born between She's 41 weeks 0 days and She's 41 weeks 6 days.
  4. Postterm: Baby is born she is 42 weeks 0 days.
