What is Intestinal Perforation ?

A gastrointestinal perforation (GP) occurs when the stomach, colon, or entire small intestine is punctured. It can be caused by a variety of diseases, including appendicitis and diverticulitis. It can also be the result of trauma, such as a knife or gunshot wound. The gallbladder may also perforate. This may present with symptoms similar to those of gastrointestinal perforation.

A perforation in the digestive tract or gallbladder can cause peritonitis. Peritonitis is inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity.
Occurs when any of the following enter the abdominal cavity:

  • bacteria
  • bile
  • stomach acid
  • partially digested food
  • stool

  • Vomiting
