What is Osteopenia ?

Osteopenia is the loss of bone mineral density (BMD). A low BMD indicates that your bones have less minerals than they need and weak bones.

Bones are made up of living tissue. Until the age of 30 or so, healthy people build more bone than they lose. But after the age of 35, bones begin to break down faster than they are made. Even a healthy person loses bone density at a rate of less than 1% per year throughout his life.
May accelerate bone loss and lead to osteopenia. For example:

  • Conditions such as hyperthyroidism.
  • Drugs such as prednisone and drugs to treat cancer, heartburn, high blood pressure, and seizures.
  • Hormonal changes in menopause.
  • Poor diet, especially diet low in calcium and vitamin D.
  • Surgery of the gastrointestinal system. It can affect the body's ability to absorb the nutrients and minerals it needs.
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, and lack of exercise.

Osteopenia usually causes no signs or symptoms until it progresses to osteoporosis. Rarely, some people with osteopenia may experience bone pain and weakness. This condition is usually detected when a person undergoes BMD screening.

There are several ways to maintain bone strength and prevent bone loss.

  • Avoid smoking.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, calcium and vitamins.
  • Exercise every day. Walking, jogging, other weight-bearing exercises, and strength training are especially effective.
  • Consume at least 1,200 mg of calcium daily.
  • Take at least 800 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily.
  • Getting outside in the sun helps your body absorb vitamin D into your bloodstream.
  • Limit alcohol.

There is no cure for osteopenia, but maintaining bone density as much as possible is important. Treatment includes simple strategies to keep bones as healthy and strong as possible and to prevent the development of osteoporosis.

  • Calcium Treatment.
  • Exercises.
  • Healthy Eating.
  • Dietary supplement for vitamin D deficiency and sun exposure to help your body absorb vitamin D.
  • Health care providers should also monitor bone density over time if osteoporosis develops.
