What is Sepsis ?

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's response to infection damages its own tissues. When the infection-fighting process attacks the body, organs become dysfunctional and abnormal.
Sepsis can develop into septic shock. This is a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can lead to serious organ problems and death.

Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis
To be diagnosed with sepsis, a person must have been identified for possible infection and must have all of the following:

  • Altered Mental State
  • Equal to 100 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg)
  • Respiratory Rate 22 or more breaths per minute

Any type of infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal) can lead to sepsis, but infections that more commonly lead to sepsis include:

  • Digestive system
  • Blood circulation (bacteremia)
  • Catheter site
  • Wound or burn
  1. Practice proper hand washing.
  2. Get the latest information on recommended immunizations.
  3. See your doctor regularly for chronic conditions.
  4. Seek immediate medical attention if infection is suspected.

The greatest concern of sepsis is prompt diagnosis and prompt treatment. Patients diagnosed with severe sepsis are usually taken to a hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) for specialized care. Doctors first identify the source and type of infection, do blood and urine tests, x-rays or CT scans, and give the patient antibiotics to treat the infection. (Note: Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections.)

IV (Intravenous or Intravenous) Fluids are given to keep blood pressure from dropping too low. In some cases, patients may need vasopressors (which constrict blood vessels) to achieve adequate blood pressure. Finally, in case of organ failure, the patient receives appropriate support measures (e.g. dialysis for renal failure, ventilator for respiratory failure, etc.).
