What is UTI?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary tract. This type of infection can affect the urethra (a condition called urethritis), the kidneys (a condition called pyelonephritis), or the bladder (a condition called cystitis).
Your urine normally does not contain bacteria. Urine is a byproduct of our filtering system, the kidneys. Urine is produced when waste and excess water are removed from the blood by the kidneys. Urine normally passes through the urinary system uncontaminated. However, bacteria can enter the urinary system from outside the body and cause problems such as infection and inflammation. This is a urinary tract infection (UTI).

Urinary tract infections are caused when microorganisms (usually bacteria) invade the urethra and bladder, causing inflammation and infection. Urinary tract infections most commonly occur in the urethra and bladder, but bacteria can also travel up the ureters and infect the kidneys. is caused by Escherichia coli, a bacterium that lives in the gut.

A urinary tract infection causes the lining of the urinary tract to become red and irritated (inflammation) and can cause some of the following symptoms:-

  • Lower pelvic pressure.
  • Urge to urinate (urgency) and incontinence (leakage).
  • Painful micturition (dysuria) and hematuria.
  • Need to urinate at night.
  • Abnormal urine color (cloudy urine) and heavy or foul-smelling urine.

Urinary tract infections should be treated. Antibiotics are drugs that kill bacteria and fight infections. Antibiotics are commonly used to treat urinary tract infections. Doctors choose drugs that best treat the specific bacteria causing the infection.
Commonly used antibiotics include

  • Nitrofurantoin.
  • Sulfonamides (sulfonamides).
  • Amoxicillin.
  • Cephalosporins.
  • Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim®).
  • Doxycycline.
  • Quinolones (such as ciprofloxacin [Cipro®]).

It is very important to follow your doctor's instructions about how to take your medicine. Do not stop taking antibiotics. Your symptoms will go away and you will feel better. If the infection is not completely treated with antibiotics, it may recur.
