What is Acute Kidney Injury?

Acute kidney failure (AKI), or acute renal failure, is a sudden episode of kidney failure that occurs over a few hours to a few days. AKI causes waste products to build up in the blood and makes it harder for the kidneys to maintain proper fluid balance in the body. It also can affect other organs, such as the brain, heart, and lungs. Acute kidney injury is common in hospitalized patients, in intensive care units, and particularly in older adults.
