What is Hysterctomy?
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the womb (uterus). After the operation, you can no longer become pregnant. If you haven't gone through menopause yet, you will stop menstruating regardless of age. It is most common in women between the ages of 40 and 50.
Hysterectomies are performed to treat health problems affecting the female reproductive system. These include:-
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Persistent pain in the lower abdomen
- Benign tumors (fibroids)
- Ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, or fallopian tube cancer.
A hysterectomy is major surgery with a long recovery time and is only considered after less invasive treatments have been tried.
There are different types of hysterectomies. The type you have depends on why you need the surgery and how much of the uterus and surrounding reproductive system can be safely left in place.
The main types of hysterectomy are:-
Total hysterectomy:-
In the uterus and cervix (cervix) are removed; This is the most commonly performed surgery.
Subtotal hysterectomy:-
The main body of the uterus is removed, leaving the cervix in place.
Total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy:-
The uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries (oophorectomy) are removed.
Radical hysterectomy:-
The uterus and surrounding tissues are removed, including the fallopian tubes, part of the vagina, ovaries, lymph glands, and fatty tissue.
