What is IVIG?
Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a therapeutic treatment for patients with antibody deficiency. It is made from a pool of immunoglobulins (antibodies) in the plasma of thousands of healthy donors. Immunoglobulins are produced by the immune system of healthy people to fight infection. Although IVIG is derived from plasma (a blood product), it is purified so that the chance of contracting a blood-borne infection is meager.

For autoimmune diseases like lupus, treatment can help the body increase the number of red blood cells they become anemic and feel very tired. IVIG helps prevent the white blood cells of people with lupus from destroying their red blood cells. In people with myositis, treatment can block the immune system from destroying muscle cells.
