What is IVIG?

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a therapeutic treatment for patients with antibody deficiency. It is made from a pool of immunoglobulins (antibodies) in the plasma of thousands of healthy donors. Immunoglobulins are produced by the immune system of healthy people to fight infection. Although IVIG is derived from plasma (a blood product), it is purified so that the chance of contracting a blood-borne infection is meager.

    1. Dermatomyositis
    2. Polymyositis
    3. Juvenile Dermatomyositis
  • Very low platelet counts in those with systemic lupus erythematosus

Some people may take IVIg in place of other medications (such as immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, or biologics) to help treat immune system disorders. In some cases, it can be taken IVIg with immunosuppressants or other medicines. The body's immune system normally makes enough antibodies to fight the germs that cause infection. But when someone has an immune deficiency, their body can't make enough of it. This puts them at a higher risk of infections that could make them very ill.
IVIG gives patients antibodies that their body doesn't make themselves, so they can fight infections. For autoimmune diseases like lupus, treatment can help the body increase the number of red blood cells they become anemic and feel very tired. IVIG helps prevent the white blood cells of people with lupus from destroying their red blood cells. In people with myositis, treatment can block the immune system from destroying muscle cells.
