What is Tonsillectomy?
Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils, two oval-shaped pads of tissue at the back of the throat, and one tonsil on each side. A tonsillectomy used to be a common procedure to treat infection and inflammation of the tonsils (tonsillitis). Today, tonsillectomy is usually performed for sleep-disordered breathing, but it can still be a treatment if tonsillitis is common or unresponsive to other treatments.
Tonsillitis is inflammation (swelling) of the tonsils. The tonsils are lymph nodes in the back of the mouth and upper throat. They help filter bacteria and other germs to prevent infections in the body. The infection can cause tonsillitis. Sore throat is a common cause. The infection can also be seen in other parts of the throat.
Symptoms of Tonsillitis are:-
- Sore throat
- Pain in the jaw and throat
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Ear pain
- Fever and chills
- Headaches
Tonsillectomy is used to treat:-
- Recurrent, chronic, or severe tonsillitis
- Complications of enlarged tonsils
- Bleeding from the tonsils
- Other rare diseases of the tonsils
- Better eating
- Improved sleep
- Lower usage of medication
- Lower risk of infections
- Improve quality of life
